PYRITE Pyrite can be classified into two types -Sulfur -Iron



COLOR AND STREAK
  • Pyrites colors can consist of a pale gold-yellow color. As it tarnishes it gets darker and iridescent.
  • The colors have nothing to do with the streak of pyrite. While the colors consist of golds and yellows, the streak test reveals the difference between pyrite and gold.
  • Gold leaves a gold streak when tested on a streak plate
  • Pyrite leaves a greenish-black to brownish-black streak behind.






LUSTER -Metallic and glistening.
ATOMS Made of FeS2 which is Iron and 2 sulfur atoms.

HARDNESS 6-6.5 Harder than Talc, Feldspar, Apatite, Fluorite, Calcite, and Gypsum.

Cleavage/Fracture No cleavage but the fracture is conchoidal

USES
Pyrite in the 16th and 17th century was used for ignition and firearms.
In the 20th century pyrite is used to mineral detect in radios.
Pyrite used to be used by the Native Americans for mirrors.
